Packaging cost per order — split bulk packs into one shipment
Enter what you paid for boxes, fill, and tape, how many orders each pack really covers, then add a small waste buffer. The page shows each line’s share and the total packaging cost per order.
Results
Box share: 0.24
Fill share: 0.2
Tape share: 0.05
Cost per order: 0.5145
Formula
each=pack÷uses; subtotal=box+fill+tape; perOrder=subtotal×(1+waste)
How the numbers are calculated
- Box share = 12 ÷ 50 = 0.24
- Fill share = 8 ÷ 40 = 0.2
- Cost per order = 0.49 × (1+0.05) = 0.5145
Shopping estimate only — paste the total into craft pricing as packaging cost.
A bulk roll of bubble wrap looks cheap on the receipt. Divided by the orders it actually wraps, that same roll can quietly add fifty cents or more to every shipment — enough to erase a thin margin you thought was safe.
This page turns three supply lines into one packaging cost: boxes or mailers, fill (bubble, kraft, tissue), and tape or extras. Each line is pack price ÷ uses, then the subtotal is nudged up by a waste percent so torn bags and double-wraps are not free.
Treat the result as a shopping estimate, not an accounting ledger. When you change box size for a new SKU, or switch from poly mailers to rigid boxes, re-count uses for a week and run the numbers again before you lock a price sheet.
How to use
- Enter each pack’s price and how many orders it covers
- Set a waste % for damaged or doubled supplies
- Read box, fill, tape shares and the total per order
Why this calculator
- Splits boxes, fill, and tape into clear per-order shares
- Adds a waste buffer instead of pretending every piece ships perfect
- Hands the total straight into craft pricing and fee checks
Good for
- Etsy and Shopify fulfillment
- Craft-fair gift wrap kits
- Subscription or gift-box lines
Tips
- Count real uses from a packing week, not the supplier’s “up to” claim.
- Re-run whenever you change box size or add tissue layers.
- If volumetric weight bills hurt, pair this with volumetric weight before you upsize mailers.
Examples
| Input | Output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| $12 / 50 boxes, $8 / 40 fill packs, $4 / 80 tape rolls, 5% waste | About $0.51 packaging per order | Default worked example on the form |
| One padded mailer $0.45 + kraft paper roll split across 30 orders | Treat the mailer as box line; kraft as fill — still two pack rows | Rename lines in your head; the math is the same |
Packaging FAQ
- Where does this number go next?
- Paste the total into Craft pricing as packaging cost so labor and margin sit on top of a real ship-out cost.
- How do I count “orders per pack”?
- Track a normal packing week: if a 50-box carton lasts 47 shipped orders because a few boxes tore, use 47 — not the carton claim.
- What belongs in waste %?
- Damaged mailers, double-boxing on fragile pieces, and “I grabbed two pieces of tissue by habit.” Start around 5% and raise it if you over-pack often.
- Need platform fees after the price is set?
- Run Etsy fee calculator once the list price includes this packaging line.
