Resolution is how many pixels you carry. Dropping a 4000×3000 photo into a 400px avatar slot wastes bandwidth on pixels nobody sees. Scaling down matches the display and naturally lightens the file.
Locking ratio keeps faces from stretching. If the platform demands 1:1, crop square first with Crop & Rotate, then resize to the required edge length.
Upsizing does not invent detail — it only stretches what you have. Start from the largest original you can.
