Estimate flooring packs for laminate, wood, or vinyl
Enter the room area, how many square feet (or m²) each pack covers, and a waste percent. Choose laminate, hardwood, vinyl/SPC, or other to load a typical waste default, then see packs to buy rounded up.
Results
Area with waste: 216 sq ft
Packs (exact): 10.8
Packs to buy: 11
Formula
Area with waste = area × (1 + waste); Packs = ceil(area with waste ÷ coverage per pack)
Worked steps (check these)
- Area with waste = 200 × (1+0.08) = 216 sq ft
- Packs (exact) = 216 ÷ 20 = 10.8
- Packs to buy = ceil(10.8) = 11

Click-lock floors are sold by pack coverage, not by counting every plank on the shelf. The carton label’s square footage already assumes a standard plank size; your job is to match that coverage to the room and add waste for the starter and finisher rows.
Open the pack coverage field and type the number printed on the box you actually intend to buy. Marketing “room size” charts on store tags are often optimistic. When two brands differ by a square foot per pack, the pack count can jump by one full carton on a medium room.
Acclimate flooring as the manufacturer requires, and keep one spare pack from the same run for future repairs. If you are pouring a thin underlayment or leveling mud first, estimate that volume with Concrete calculator before the planks go down.
How to estimate flooring packs
- Choose units and enter the floor area
- Enter coverage per pack from the carton label
- Pick flooring type (or set waste % yourself)
- Read area with waste and packs to buy
Why use this flooring calculator
- Converts area into whole packs stores will sell you.
- Type-based waste defaults reduce guesswork.
- Coverage per pack is editable for any brand.
- Shows exact packs vs rounded buy quantity.
- Pairs cleanly with tile and paint tools for full-room remodels.
Good for
- Laminate refresh in bedrooms and hallways
- SPC/vinyl in kitchens and rentals
- Hardwood cartons for a living room with bay windows
- Comparing two pack coverages before choosing a brand
- Quick landlord material lists between tenants
Common flooring mistakes to avoid
- Trusting the store’s “covers a 12×12 room” sticker without checking pack coverage.
- Using 0% waste on rooms with many doorways and closets.
- Starting install from the wrong wall and discovering a skinny last row you did not stock for.
- Mixing production lots when you under-order mid-job.
- Forgetting closets and pantries that share the same floor height.
Worked flooring examples
| Input | Output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft room, 20 sq ft per pack, 8% waste (laminate) | Area with waste 216 sq ft; 10.8 packs exact → 11 packs to buy | packs=ceil(area×(1+waste)/coveragePerPack) |
| 200 sq ft, 20 sq ft/pack, 10% waste (hardwood) | Area with waste 220 sq ft → 11 packs exact → 11 packs | Hardwood often needs a bit more waste for board direction and defects |
| 350 sq ft open plan, 22 sq ft/pack, 7% waste (vinyl/SPC) | Area with waste 374.5 → about 17.02 packs → 18 packs | Read coverage on the carton; SPC packs vary by brand |
Flooring calculator FAQ
- How are packs calculated?
- Multiply area by (1 + waste), divide by coverage per pack, then round up. That is the carton count to put in the cart.
- Why does flooring type change waste?
- Defaults differ: laminate about 8%, hardwood about 10%, vinyl/SPC about 7%. Irregular rooms and diagonal layouts still deserve a manual bump.
- Do I measure under cabinets?
- Usually measure wall-to-wall of the finished floor area. Built-in cabinets that stay put are often excluded; islands you will floor under should be included.
- What about underlayment and transitions?
- This tool counts face flooring only. Buy underlayment by roll coverage separately, and plan reducer strips by doorway count.
- Ceramic tile instead of vinyl?
- Switch to Tile calculator — tiles are sold by piece and box, not pack coverage.
- Should stairs use the same waste %?
- Stairs waste more because of risers and cuts. Estimate stair treads separately or raise waste well above the room default.
- Painting baseboards in the same remodel?
- Yes — size the floor here, then use Paint calculator for walls and trim in the same footprint.
